One day while on a hike with my wife near Lake Tahoe, we met a mother bear and her young cub. They stopped not more than thirty or forty feet away and just stood there looking at us. We did the same thing. It was surreal and frightening at the same time.
Although I had hiked for many years around Lake Tahoe, I had never been this close to black bears. This encounter inspired a book about a young boy, named Alex, and his friendship with a bear cub.
He just lost his pet dog and discovered through an unusual set of circumstances that the young bear cub made a lot of the same actions and gestures that his dog made. This created a strange friendship that Alex suddenly had to destroy.
